Figured it out...

Okay, so now I know how to look at other posts but I see that [Roothy] is much more detail and rules oriented than I am. (I guess that's why she's a lawyer). I am a little more loosey goosey about the rules of my compact. I just don't go shopping at all at any store other than a thrift store or grocery store. If I do go to a thrift store, I can only buy things I absolutely need like all my wooden spoons rotted away and I need a new one. For grocery shopping I try to eat from the pantry (and freezer) first before I go shopping. On non-compact years I tend to fill up my cupboards with such necessities as 40 boxes of Rice-a- Roni because it was on sale at Grocery Store Outlet for .50 a box and I don't even know what all is in my freezer. I can't see through the freezer burn.

It might be interesting for me to look at my spending on a month by month basis to see what all I actually waste money on. I usually don't even balance my check book, I always naturally spend less than I make.

  1. Now that I've read the blog that I just posted I see that I need to preview for spelling and punctuation errors. Can I go back and fix something I've already posted. Also, can only the three of us see this blog?

  2. Yay for UncleSam!!

I had never done any kind of formal budget, either. It was an interesting exercise.

As for rules, my idea was that we'd each do this our own way, for our own goals, and just kind of write about it. :)

  3. I haven't formalized my rules just yet, but I do plan to balance my checkbook. I hadn't done so since April '07. I might keep a spending log. I've considered keeping a diet log, too. I have the little notebooks...

  4. You guys are terrible!! You don't balance your checkbook? What do you do for fun?

I have all my income and expenses entered into Quickbooks for the 10 years or so. It was a great help when working on the financial settlement stuff for the divorce.

And it is depessing to see that *former spouse* spent $100,000 on wine over the course of 4 years. Sure could use that $100K now!

  5. Wow--he spent as much on wine as I spent, period. That's crazy.

Chip, I did buy Quicken last year, and somehow it got super screwed up, and my "online" balances are very different from the Quicken balances. I should figure out how to get it working; maybe I'll get it up and running for January. That way I can "report" my itemized expenses to the blog, to keep me honest.
