Eat from the Pantry Month

Well, I've made it to week two without going to the grocery store and I'm not starving yet. Actually it's been since X-Mas that I haven't been to the grocery store so I'm really on week 3. I'm nearly out of carrots and only have a few bags of assorted frozen vegetables many cans of green beans and corn left. I have an industrial sized bag of potatoes left over from Thanksgiving. I ate one yesterday that was getting a green tinge on it and I didn't die so I think I'll make corn chowder tonight.

I do still have plenty to eat at my house and I really want to see the back of my freezer at the end of this month.

I ended up buying the mattresses for my front spare room through craig's list. I didn't SEE any bedbugs but I sprayed the mattresses with some lysol that I found under my kitchen sink. (I think the lysol must have been there since I moved it because I've never bought any, does it have an expiration date?)

There, I posted...

  1. I guess I've been kind of doing pantry-month inadvertently, since I haven't shopped since before the new year, either. As far as fresh veggies go, I'm down to some onions, lots of garlic (which I buy in massive quantities), 3 very small tomatoes, some apples, some sweet baby bell peppers, some limes, and that damn third cucumber. I'm leaving for Ann Arbor tomorrow and won't be back until Saturday, so I'm sure that the cucumber, tomatoes and peppers will be bad by the time I get back if I don't eat them tonight. What can I make tonight for dinner that uses a *lot* of both peppers and cucumber? I'm thinking I'm going to have to triage.

  2. I think maybe you should reconsider eating the green potatoes. I was reading "On Food and Cooking," and it mentioned that there may be toxins present in green potatoes.

  3. I thought it was only present in the green parts, though. If you peel it off, I think you would be fine, right?

  4. Well, I didn't peel it AND I ate the skins. I didn't die but when I make the chowder or Roothy's soup I'll peel them.
