Uncle Sam's False Economies

Costco- 25 lbs of something you don't need is no better deal than 5 lbs. Also, a giant bag of perishable food that you can't finish before it rots is not saving any waste.

Ross- I have a friend that is going to the poor house saving money at Ross's

Discount Gas Stations- You use up more gas waiting in line to fill-up than if you just paid .03-.05 more per gallon across the street. (this is probably more true with my 10 gallon Civic Hybrid tank than with a 25 gallon SUV tank)

  1. You mean it is "less true" with your Civic.

But still, I *do* believe that time is money. It has taken me a long time to really accept that, but convenience really can be worth paying for. The key is to pay for genuine convenience. Add to my false economy list paying for "conveniences" that save you virtually no time relative to the discount option.

  2. No, I think I meant more true. If you have a 25 gallon take you would save $1.25 a fill up as opposed to only .50 cents on my car if you went to the more expensive place. Also, I agree, up to a point, time IS money, and it is not worth it for me to save .50 cents a fill-up to go to the more inconvenient discount place.

  3. Oh, ok, I see. I was calculating the cost to idle your car for ten minutes, which for a hybrid is essentially zero (since you'd be in electric mode), and for the SUV could cost a few pennies. Your way makes more sense--calculating the savings on gas. But yes, either way, the cheaper gas is not worth it IF you have to wait. Then again, the last time I had to wait to fill up my car was on a very busy Memorial Day weekend at an interstate service station. (Except in NJ where they don't let you pump your own gas, so you ALWAYS have to wait.) Maybe pump your gas at a different time of day, and get the best of both worlds?
