Have you ever had an idea at night that seemed really good, but then in real-life it was not so much? Well, I recently read about how good kale is for me. I add flax seed to my smoothies to make them healthier. I got an idea that a little kale blended into my fruit smoothie would boost the nutritional value. I wish I could say I was drunk or something when I got the idea, but I haven't had a drink in months if not years!
So... I put a few pieces in with my fruit this morning; maybe 3 T or so. It was about as aweful as you might imagine. Kale doesn't actually "blend". It gets finely chopped and clumps together as kind of a suspension. I do not recommend kale as a smoothie-booster. I repeat: fruit + kale = YUK!

I love kale. But it shouldn't be eaten raw; in fact I think it's not even healthy to do so (it has some kind of something-acid that isn't good for you, but which disappears when you cook it.)
ReplyDeleteThe trick is to cook the living hell out of it. Chop it really good (like in shredded strips) then rinse well. Shake it a bit, and put it in a pan--that's all the water you need. Cover and cook with some olive oil on very low heat for, seriously, 45 minutes. (Check often to make sure water hasn't entirely evaporated). It's best of all with chopped onion and garlic in there, though I know you would object!
That does sound nasty. New Leaf, a locally owned grocery store in Half Moon Bay sells a raw kale salad that is delicious. Maybe I'll bring a pint with me to Chicago if we go. Kipsy, have you talked with your other half? If not Chicago what about coming here? We could do a real Spa Ghettoway to Monterey Bay or something.
ReplyDeleteI'd be up for that, too. It would have the added advantage of being able to see Chip and the mini-Chips, and... what are the names of those other two cats? Anyway, I think it's been awhile since I was out that way.
ReplyDeleteI just had a vegan lunch with Uncle Sam. Since I am now a vegan may I be included in the spa get-away? There wouldn't be room over Christmas for us all in CA, but you would all be welcome in Texas or I could go to Chicago.
ReplyDeleteOf course! Even nonvegans like Chip are welcome--though logistically I know that would be hard given the kiddies. Sorry, didn't mean to sounds exclusive! I can comfortably host three in Chicago, and uncomfortably even host four (that person would either be on the couch, or on an air mattress). And there is lots and lots to do here over the holidays. :)
ReplyDeleteHey, don't I get to weigh in about whether there's room to host three guests at Christmas? Pammy has extra beds now, and I'm sure Brian and Marnie could put someone up, too, so there'd definitely be room. And you could come see us in Dickens Fair!!
ReplyDeleteCoal is resigned to the fact that I will be with my siblings over X-mas. I'm OK with anywhere. Being with the CA enclave has definite appeal.
