Blog

I am proclaiming this blog legally dead. Time of death = last post by someone other than me, well over a week ago.

I'll start posting again if you guys do. Otherwise, I guess we had a pretty good run of about a month. Longer than most blogs last, anyway.

  1. You can't kill a blog after a WEEK!!!

We just need to get in the habit of having something to say!

  2. Strangely, I never seem to have that problem.

  3. I can't figure out how to start a new blog so I will just add a comment:

No excuses for not being a better blogger. I have been getting ready for the trip to Egypt; buying stuff and going to the doctor. I had another vertigo attack but am getting a treatment next Thursday right before I leave. I also had to get my hearing aid fixed (under warranty).

Becca was here for a Costco run last Saturday. I had three things to buy and that is ALL i got.

Uncle Ben will be in Luxor while we are there and will take Edie and me around. Then when we come back to Cairo he has something planned for just me. I am reading up on Egypt so I won't embarrass him with my ignorance.

I won't have e-mail access for three weeks so won't be able to blog - but I will make up for it when I get back.

Roothy, I still can't find anything about Citigroup going under. The media paints a rosy picture while the stock market continues to crater. And no one responded about my size 8 nice pants. I may hang on to them because you skinny sisters are going to get fatter sometime - sooner than later.

Someone tell me how to post an original blog, please.

  4. well, you've posted an original blog entry before! Usually, there is a button somewhere along the top ("new post" or some such). You can also do a "new post" from your "dashboard" page.

Citigroup is still in business. It is, however, a zombie--walking dead. If it officially goes under, then the Depression has officially begun.

  5. On the "something to say" front.

I loved Chip's most recent post. Basically, I love it when you guys post:

    1. Your impressions about the economy as you see it. Locally, how are people thinking, behaving? Do you hear people talking, and what do they say? How is employment where you are? How are real estate prices? Etc.

    2. Your hints-n-tips and anecdotes about how you spend or save. Both the good ones, and the bad ("Do as I say, not as I do.")

    3. Any interesting links you've found, or even thoughts you've had sans links, about what you've read in the media about both the economy, and frugality/personal economy.

There! That should give you some ideas. :)

  6. Info from Fort Worth: Our economy has been boosted by the Barnett Shale natural gas boom. However, at the end of 2008 the drillers cut way back on new wells and left some holdouts without a contract. Our homeowners association got $52K bonus, but have not received any royalties. Meanwhile, our HOA dues have gone up $10 per month.

The bank bailout and the economy is a topic of the Wednesday lunch group each week. We are all mad at the banks. Most of us have experienced 30-40% losses in the stock market, but one member cashed out at the beginning of 2007. I seem to be the only one taking serious steps to economize. My next venture is to convert to VOP (?) for my phone line. This will include unlimited long distance for $17.95 per month as opposed to no long distance and $19.95 per month.

My deposits for December exceeded my spending by over $3K - that included a year end cost-of living increase from Social Security, two State Bar salary checks, and no more $750 monthly payment to my savings. Plus no big purchases - I am emulating Uncle Sam with nothing new - and really cutting back on book buying.

I didn't have an outfit I thought was suitable for my flight to and from Egypt with a jacket for cold nights. After the usual thrift store runs I finally broke down and went to Ross. Finding nothing I dug back into my closet and found a nylon jacket and pants (with zippers at the ankles) that MK had given me when she outgrew the pants. I ran them through the washer, sewed up a ripped seam in the lining and now have a serviceable outfit for the trip at no cost. The only new purchase was a pair of hiking shoes on sale.

Re; Costco coupons: Usually the coupons are for name brands, and I can get the items cheaper with store brands. (i.e. otc medicine, staples, computer paper etc.) I have bought big ticket items at Costco for years - and hope they have taken off the coupon discount if there was one.
